This weekend marks the latest induction ceremony of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. With names like Suzuki, Sabathia and Wagner the tens of thousands of baseball fans making their pilgrimage to Cooperstown, NY are surely in for a memorable experience. In addition to the induction ceremony the carefully curated rotating display of sacred artifacts will also include Pete Rose. As it has despite his banishment from MLB in 1989. It’s important to understand that the HoF is not the MLB hall of fame. It is operated by a private foundation founded by Stephen Carlton Clark in 1936. In 1991 the HoF board voted to exclude anyone on MLB’s banned list. Thus, the all-time hit leader was never eligible for induction.
In May of this year MLB lifted the ban on 15 former players. Amongst them was Pete Rose. It’s reasonable to expect to hear his name on a ballot. But when you ask? It would take action from the hall’s Historical Overview Committee to include him on the Classic Baseball Era Committee’s 2027 ballot. In 2027 we may see some of baseball’s most impactful players like Rose of the Reds, Shoeless Joe and several others from the 1921 White Sox. One thing is for sure. It’s going to be a while before we see any other White Sox players be inducted. Sorry Southside I couldn’t miss taking advantage of that one.
